But for those of us who grew up in California, cars were our first love. They meant power, beauty, freedom and maybe even love on some moonless night, in the backseat, out by the beach …

That’s why Jimmy’s Old Car Picnic, a once-a-year event at Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park, is so important. Today’s the day, dawn to sunset. Jimmy O’Keefe is the guy who thought it up, a picnic for old cars and the people who like them.

There aren’t too many rules. Jimmy charges $30 per car. People are free. Cars have to be pre-1972 models. Jimmy welcomes them all: classic cars, show cars, rat rods, historic cars, clunkers, cars that only go out on Sundays. Last year, somebody even brought a small steamboat on a trailer.

There are no vendors, no amplified music, and if you want food, you have to bring it yourself. Profits go to a city charity. People just come, Jimmy says, to check out the cars and talk.

“It’s easy, it’s simple, it’s fun. It’s a San Francisco thing,” he says, as if that explains everything.

In a way, it does. Like a lot of us, Jimmy O’Keefe grew up around cars. When he was a kid, he sold hamburgers at Jumbo’s Drive-In out by the zoo to hot-rodders who raced on the Great Highway.

“I just like cars,” he says. “It was born in me like the other Sunset guys.”

Jimmy’s first car was a 1940 Ford, which he bought in 1962.

“It was black,” he says. “It cost only 65 bucks.”

It had no engine, and like a lot of car guys, O’Keefe and his pals put one in – a flathead V-8, 85 horsepower.

Car people know a lot about V-8s and Fords, and Chevys, too, and the famous Oldsmobile 88. I didn’t fix them myself, but I sure rode in them and drove them when I could.

I grew up on the other side of town – Potrero Hill and the Mission District – and cars meant freedom to us. We’d take off after work on Fridays and drive to Yosemite, maybe, or the Russian River, which seemed impossibly far away in those days.

Once over the bridge, nobody could tell us what to do. We learned about foreign cultures: To city kids, the San Joaquin Valley was another world. We learned about the Giant Orange roadside stops, about small-town cops and speed traps, about camping in the woods, and more about Yosemite than a hundred Ken Burns films could provide. We drove all night and listened to Wolfman Jack on the radio.

When we got back to the city, we’d try to lure our girlfriends to the drive-in movie out by the Cow Palace or take them up to Telegraph Hill and see the view. We’d steam up the windows pretty good.

We’d go to Mel’s drive-in, just like the kids in “American Graffiti.” We’d cruise up and down Mission Street, like a later generation of Latino lowriders. We thought nothing of driving down to Santa Cruz for a hamburger, or to the river on the off chance we might meet some new girls. On Saturdays, we’d put on suits or sport coats and drive around North Beach looking for a wedding reception we could crash.

We couldn’t do any of this on mountain bikes, or skateboards or whatever they have now. Cars made it all possible. And youth.

I still have an old car. It’s a yellow 1965 Plymouth Barracuda that I bought new. After all these years, it looks pretty good, by my lights, but it has no air conditioning, no power steering and the radio only works on Tuesdays.

The Barracuda can’t make the old car picnic today because I have another commitment. Maybe next year, if it’s still running.

It’s official, ESPN’s Steve Phillips has amazing taste in women. It was released today that Phillips had an affair with another lower level ESPN employee, Brooke Hundley.

Phillips ended the affair and was then harassed and stocked by this “lovely” lady. She then proceeded to leave a letter on the front steps of the Phillips home addressed to Steve’s wife.

I don’t know about you, but this chick seems like a winner!

Apple’s Newest: “Magic Mouse”

Apple’s newest peripheral is the Magic Mouse

As rumored, Apple has just introduced a new mouse called the Magic Mouse. This mouse will bring Multi-Touch capabilities to desktop Macs for the first time, something that the iPhone has had since its release in June 2007 and the MacBook Air since it was released in February 2008.

It loses the scroll ball found on the Mighty Mouse, but adds support for scrolling gestures. This mouse is also wireless, using Bluetooth, and has a four month battery life. This mouse is available for $69 in late October, and requires Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8 or later.
